Still Summer In Fernie

While it's going to be a bit cold and rainy this weekend, things are looking sunny for the rest of September. That means there is still time to enjoy the mountains in their summer coats. The kilometers of trails that connect all the nooks and crannies of Fernie are always great fun. Nothing is quite as refreshing as a brisk stroll through the mountain air. Right now many of the local wildlife are making their preparations for winter. That means extra chances of seeing some of the excellent fauna that abound in this pristine mountain paradise.

While this comes as no surprise given its location in the Canadian Rockies, what may be surprising for some is the great time to be had during the summer. The simple truth is that Fernie is an outdoor lover’s paradise. All kinds of summer activities can be enjoyed here such as hiking, biking, whitewater rafting, fishing, boating, and golf. There is something for the whole family to enjoy. Fernie is located in the beautiful Elk Valley, which is part of the East Kootenay region of British Columbia in the Canadian Rocky Mountains.

The Full Throttle Mountain Bike Festival

This Saturday and Sunday, August 21st and 22nd, the Full Throttle Mountain Bike Festival will take place here in Fernie, British Columbia. It will include not only plenty of mountain biking, but hiking and sight-seeing as well. Saturday will feature an all-mountain downhill race incorporating singletrack with speed and endurance aspects as well. There will also be a Dirt Jump Jam and a kid's race. Sunday will host a short loop race, as well as a dual slalom race.

TransRockies Race Crosses the Great Divide

The TransRockies mountain bike race, one of the toughest races on earth, recently began its trek with a time trial stage here in Fernie, British Columbia. Stage three marked the race's cross over the Great Divide of the Canadian Rockies. Also known as the Continental Divide, this line of mountains that stretch across the Americas is what separates the rivers and watersheds that drain into the Pacific Ocean from those that drain into the Atlantic or Arctic Oceans. As such, this stage of the race represents some of the toughest, wildest, and most remote mountain biking to be had.

TransRockies - Fernie Time Trial Complete

This weekend saw the start of the TransRockies mountain bike race. The annual race offers some of the most difficult mountain biking in the world, as racers make their way through the Canadian Rockies. This year, the race went back to its roots and kicked off in Fernie, British Columbia. Here the racers competed in a time trial for Day 1. The weather was unusually rainy, especially given the brilliant sunny days that Fernie has been experiencing recently. However, that didn't keep racers from putting up some good time results, nor did it keep the day from being a big success.

TransRockies Mountain Bike Race Starts Soon!

The TransRockies Mountain Bike Race, dubbed the “toughest mountain bike race on earth,” will make its start on Sunday. The race starts here in Fernie, British Columbia, and will finish seven days later in Canmore, Alberta. The TransRockies has been held annually since 2002, when it became North America's first multi-day mountain bike race. This year is special for many reasons. First, there is a new route which will include much more single-track trail riding, instead of road riding.

New Mountain Biking Trail Opens In Fernie

This weekend saw the opening of the Porky Blue downhill trail here in Fernie, British Columbia. World renowned for its backcountry skiing in the winter, Fernie is also a great place for mountain biking and other outdoor summer activities. One of the great things about mountain biking in Fernie is that there are so many trails, meaning there is something for everyone. Porky Blue continues in that spirit, and has cross country sections as well has the downhill part. The trail is a diversion of the Porcipine Rim trail, and lasts about four hours.

July will soon be finished, and then comes more waiting as August, September, and November pass. Finally, with the arrival of December comes the beginning of ski season here in Fernie, British Columbia. Just because there is no snow here in Fernie, does not mean everyone is sitting around, or that there is nothing to do. Quite the contrary in fact. One of the more popular activities during this time is mountain biking. Fernie has some truly spectacular trails available for all ages and abilities.
