Island Lake

Exploring the Canadian Rockies

Fernie B.C. is a perfect winter paradise. Lots of fluffy champagne powder falls here year after year. This brings many visitors looking for a great backcountry session of skiing or snowboarding. But on those days that the weary muscles just don't work, consider going ice fishing. Enjoy a relaxing day in the seclusion of the wilderness as you wait for something to bite. Many operators offer guided excursions to local fishing spots. You can expect to find cutthroat and eastern brook trout and rainbow during the season. Catskiing Canada

Historical Fernie

Everyone is familiar with British Columbia, as it is the premier destination for heliskiing, snow cat skiing, and regular resort skiing. Before the discovery of white gold, Fernie and the surrounding area were classic examples of mountain mining and logging towns. The region was seasonally populated by Native Americans, until 1873 when Michael Phillips discovered Crowsnest Pass and found outcroppings of coal. It took quite a while to build the mines and railway needed to extract the coal, but by 1897 things were up and running. As Fernie grew, commercial logging also became big business.

Mountain Biking in Fernie

If you like the outdoors, Fernie B.C. has it all, whether it be winter or summer fun you seek. As far as summer activities go, you can't beat the mountain biking that Fernie has to offer. There is plenty for every skill level too. Plenty of break-neck downhill heart pounding madness as well as endless cross-country trails through the breathtaking wilderness that surrounds Fernie. Bear Season Starts Early in Elk Valley

It's bear season here in Fernie B.C. and the surrounding area. There have already been many sightings, and the first garbage bear was put down last week. Fernie B.C. is a great place for hiking and mountain biking during the summer, but this just goes to show that you need to be careful, and use common sense. If you go hiking, be careful not to leave food, and other things out that might attract bears. Make sure to follow all the warnings. If you're still unsure, consider hiring a guide for your hike. Bear encounters are rare, but they do happen, so be prepared.

Guided Alpine Hiking at Island Lake Lodge

Located in beautiful Fernie B.C., Island Lake Lodge is a premier catskiing operation in the winter. But just because the snow is on vacation doesn't mean you can't enjoy the mountains now. If you're used to going down the mountain on skis, experience the mountain in reverse this summer with a guided alpine hike.

Island Lake Welcomes Summer Visitors

June 21st was the first official day of summer, and with it come summer weddings. For the bride and groom looking for something more secluded and serene than Hawaii, Fernie B.C. is the place to be. Ceremonies can be held in one of the many historic chapels or churches, or in one of the area’s resorts. Inside Island Lake Lodge – Riding the Lines of Legends

Nestled deep in the Kootenays, between two pristine valley lies one of the most beautiful places I have ever had the privilege of visiting. Just outside the picturesque town of Fernie, B.C. is the mecca called Island Lake Lodge.

The White Gold Rush

“There is gold in them thar hills”. I’m not certain where that phrase came from, it’s been a century since Western Canada’s last “great Gold Rush” brought hoards chasing the dream, but it strikes a chord in me every time I hear it. In the last decade another “rush” has surfaced in British Columbia – the rush to open up BC’s backcountry skiing, the rush for “white gold”.

Five Star Cats – the terrain, powder and luxury of Island Lake Lodge are almost too much to handle

Chill Factor Magazine takes a tour of Island Lake Lodge Catskiing and finds the finest powder experience in North America.      “Snowy – Opulent – Privileged – Hedonistic – Incomparable – Enjoyment. That’s the truest description of the Island Lake Lodge Catskiing experience I can muster.
