Island Lake Catskiing has simply been having an amazing snow year. Over 200 cms of the white stuff has fallen in the last couple of weeks. The consolidated base in the Alpine is around 5.5 metres or 18 feet of snow. As September comes to an end, you can see signs of the season change. Perhaps the biggest sign that summer is no more is that the last Fernie Mountain Market was held yesterday. The Market is a farmer’s and producer's market that brings local, healthy foods to the residents and visitors of Fernie every summer Sunday. Now that weather has taken a turn towards the bottom of the thermometer, the celebrations of summer turn to celebrations of winter.

This weekend marks the annual running of a veritable Fernie institution. Sponsored by the Fernie chapter of the Knights of Columbus, this event is open for boys and girls ages nine through fourteen. It's like the Labor Day Demolition Derby, but for the young ones. The event uses strict rules to keep drivers safe and promote a fun event. Contestants must only use wheels and steering that have been officially sanctioned. Also, the car and driver may not weigh more than 250 pounds. Every year more than 100 kids show up to race.

The British Snow Tour is currently in progress. The event is a series of competitions, which takes place at some of the indoor snow slopes of the country. Things started off in Glasgow, Scotland last Sunday with the Trespass Snowboard/Skiercross Championships and Rail Jam. Next, things move to Milton Keynes for the Giro Big Air Championships and Big Air Jam. In this event, contestants will lay down their best tricks on 3m, 6m and 10m kickers on a specially constructed indoor slope.
