As September comes to an end, you can see signs of the season change. Perhaps the biggest sign that summer is no more is that the last Fernie Mountain Market was held yesterday. The Market is a farmer’s and producer's market that brings local, healthy foods to the residents and visitors of Fernie every summer Sunday. Now that weather has taken a turn towards the bottom of the thermometer, the celebrations of summer turn to celebrations of winter.

For those of us addicted to British Columbia champagne powder, these autumn months can seem unending. It's almost like the fact that winter is so close makes it feel that much further away. The days seem to slow to a crawl. If you're lucky enough to live in a place like Fernie, British Columbia, or come to visit, there are outdoor activities to take your mind off the waiting. For example, there is an abundance of hiking and mountain biking. Sadly, they don't quite feed the hunger we have to start charging lines and shredding slopes.

Island Lake Catskiing is a world-renowned backcountry skiing destination located just outside of Fernie, British Columbia. While their terrain is spectacular, and the skiing is phenomenal, that perfection can come at a cost to the local wildlife and wilderness. All outdoor activities impact nature in some way, but through careful planning and education, the impact can be minimized. This prevents the destruction of the very thing that keeps visitors returning to Island Lake for year after year.

Island Lake Catskiing is one of the premier catskiing destinations in Canada and the world. It is also one of the oldest, having been in the business for more than 20 years. That kind of longevity can only be achieved by having the best service and terrain available. One of the services Island Lake provides is specialty catskiing tours. The first tour is designed for families. Normally skiers and snowboards who visit Island Lake must be of 19 years or older.
